At the carbon electrode technology forum and application seminar held on March 28, Sun Qing, secretary-general of the China Carbon Industry Association, pointed out that carbon materials are not only used in basic materials such as iron and steel smelting, aluminum electrolysis, ferroalloys, calcium carbide, industrial silicon, yellow Phosphorus smelting. Among them, carbon electrode materials have attracted much attention. According to Sun Qing, the carbon electrode is a carbonaceous conductive material made of electric calcined anthracite, petroleum coke, graphite powder, coal tar pitch, etc., after batching, molding, roasting, and mechanical processing. As the conductive electrode of the submerged arc furnace, it is widely used in metal and non-metal smelting such as industrial silicon, ferroalloy, calcium carbide, yellow phosphorus, etc.

Sun Qing pointed out that at present, carbon electrodes are generally used in submerged arc furnaces for the production of industrial silicon, graphite electrodes are still used in closed submerged arc furnaces for the production of yellow phosphorus, and electrode pastes are mainly used in ferroalloy submerged arc furnaces and calcium carbide ore hot stove. However, the application of carbon electrodes in submerged arc furnaces for ferroalloy and calcium carbide smelting is still in the initial stage of research and development and testing, but it is the general trend from the perspective of environmental protection.

"In the ferroalloy industry, it is feasible to replace the electrode paste with carbon electrodes." Weng Xuehe, chief engineer of the smelting raw materials department of the Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute, pointed out, but the current difficulty is mainly the habit of ferroalloy smelting, the furnace roof and interlayer electrodes of ferroalloy electric furnaces The part needs to be modified.

Weng Xuehe suggested that starting from the new ferroalloy electric furnace, the design should be changed to carbon electrode smelting, and the existing ferroalloys should be carried out step by step according to the variety. Step 1: Metal manganese and metal chromium basically use graphite electrodes, and carbon electrodes can be used instead, which can reduce costs and be easily accepted by all parties; Step 2: Manganese-silicon alloys, silicon-chromium alloys, silicon-calcium alloys, etc. do not require carbon electrodes , can be used for ferroalloys of iron elements; the third step: gradually realize the use of carbon electrodes for high value-added ferroalloys such as high, medium and low chromium ferrochrome and vanadium ferroalloy; the fourth step is ferroalloys with relatively low added value such as ferrosilicon.

Chairman Wang Guangxi introduced that the current market demand for carbon electrodes is 200,000 tons per year, and it is estimated that the market demand for new carbon electrodes will reach 1.1 million tons by 2020, which means that the market size of carbon electrodes can reach more than 10 billion.
